John and Ariel Gustafson (Jack Lemmon and Ann-Margret) are married and still neighbors to Max Goldman (Walter Matthau). The main issues in their lives are fishing (to catch Catfish Hunter, the huge catfish) and the engagement of their children, Melanie (Daryl Hannah) and Jacob (Kevin Pollak). Then Maria Ragetti (Sophia Loren) and her mother, (Ann Morgan Guilbert) arrive in town to create more strife and practical jokes. Maria wants to open a restaurant in the erstwhile bait shop. The men fight it by sabotaging her efforts. Grandpa Gustafson (Burgess Meredith), however, is interested in Mama Ragetti. Ariel befriends Maria then thinks that John spent a night with her. Max and John start fighting again, Ariel gets disgusted and leaves. Max and Maria fall for each other. And on the way to their children's wedding Max and John stop off to have a go at Catfish Hunter. Yet, somehow, everything works out in the end.
